Suspension/Deferment from Studies

Students can have their enrolment temporarily suspended in the event of:

A deferment or suspension of enrolment may affect the eligibility of the student to remain in Australia on a student visa. In the event that a student is suspended and the student believes the suspension is unjustified, the student has twenty working days in which to access the appeals and complaints process. The institute is obligated to maintain the student’s enrolment while the appeal process is being undertaken.

Academic Counseling

The student contact officer, class trainers, the training manager and the director are available to meet with students to discuss future career opportunities, class work and provide information and advice about further academic studies at Charles Sturt University (CSU) as well as other learning institutions/pathways.

Learning Support Unit

The Learning Support Unit provides additional academic assistance through individual, group or workshop sessions in areas such as Time & Self Management, Study Skills, Writing Skills, Assignments, Referencing, and Computer Skills as required. A ‘job board’ located in the computer room provides resources for students interested in gaining employment and is regularly updated with local job vacancies. Students can also access the internet to search and apply for jobs.

Flexible Learning and Assessment

Classroom based learning and kitchen based practical cooking are the principle methods for course delivery HMIA. We offer online learning support and information technology networks, namely the internet, to support learning activities. This may include the provision of online learning resources, subject outlines, electronic copies of materials used in class, electronic submission of assignments, e-mail student-teacher communication related to learning activity and online administrative services. Students can take upto 25% upto their total course online.

Welfare and Guidance Services

Student Support Services

The Student Contact officers are the first point of contact for students seeking assistance or advice with any concerns that may arise during the course of their studies. The Student contact officers are available to consult with students from Monday – Friday between 9am -5pm.

The Student Contact Officers have access to a range of resources and services that the student may wish to access including health/legal services, study facilities/resources and welfare support.

The training manager, teaching staff and administrative staff at HMIA are also available to provide general advice and assistance with matter such as studying and issues regarding homework.

ESOS Framework

Training Organizations who appear on the CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutes and Courses for Overseas Students) Register are governed by the ESOS (Education Services for Overseas Students) Framework which consists of a number of pieces of legislation including the ESOS Act 2000 and the National Code of Practice for Registration Authorities and Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students. These laws are in place to protect overseas students and to uphold high quality standards of education within Australian Education Institutes.

Language Literacy and Numeracy

HMIA recognises the importance of basic skills in English language literacy and Numeracy (LLN). Improving basic skills will assist in breaking down barriers presently facing participants. To achieve this, HMIA will ensure that all participants enrolled in training courses are given the opportunity to learn based on the individual’s current competencies in LLN. HMIA will also identify individual levels of competencies in LLN for the purpose of identifying further vocational training or educational needs and where possible, tailor training programs to suit individual needs.

Appeals and Complaints Procedures

Students have access to HMIA’s appeals/complaints procedure in the event that they wish to make a complaint or appeal a decision.

We aim to resolve all disputes quickly and if required, an external mediator will be appointed at no expense to the student if the student is dissatisfied with the resolution proposed by HMIA. The independent mediator will be provided by the Australian Counsel for Private Education and Training. To initiate a complaint/appeal, students must complete a Complaint/Appeal form available from reception and go through the process shown below.
