Overview:
This nationally recognized qualification has been designed to develop skills and knowledge required to perform advanced diagnostic operations in the automotive retail, service and repair environment. This qualification is suitable for persons who want to work in the automotive industry as automotive lead or master technician and automotive technical adviser.
Program Objectives
To enhance employ ability of learners as a motor mechanic, by imparting required practical skills and knowledge necessary to gain employment in the automotive retail, and /or service and repair environment.
Target Group
The target group for this qualification delivered by Technical Education Australia is fee paying students and skilled or semi-skilled technicians who:
- Have experience in automotive workshops, carrying out service and repair on light vehicles but are without formal qualifications.
- Hold Certificate III and wish to upgrade their qualifications to Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis.
- Seek employment in the automotive retail sector.

Pathways into the qualification
- Those undertaking Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis are required to have completed an automotive mechanical Certificate III qualification or be able to demonstrate equivalent competency.

Entry Requirements
Domestic and International Students:
An Automotive Mechanical Certificate III qualification.
International Students: (English Language Requirements)
International learners must meet Student Visa requirements and provide certified evidence of achievement in English language proficiency as follows:
- International Students from English Speaking Countries i.e. Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom or United States need to provide evidence of:
Study in English
You must provide evidence that you have:
- studied in English for at least five years in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom or United States
or
- within two years of your application date have successfully completed in Australia
- a foundation course
- a Senior Secondary Certificate of Education
or
- a substantial part of a Certificate IV or higher level qualification, from the Australian Qualifications Framework.
- International Students from Non-English Speaking Countries:
English Language Test
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Certificate IELTS test score of:
- 5 or above for direct entry into a course; or
- Learners with IELTS score below 5 would need to undertake an ELICOS course prior to the main Automotive Certificate IV course. Learners can study a preliminary English course for up to 30 weeks.
Note: You can take the Academic IELTS test to meet English Language requirements for a student visa.
