Overview:
‘Certificate IV in EAL’ is an advanced level English language course designed to improve literacy skills such as speaking, reading writing as well as digital literacy. Introducing more complex concepts and skills, this course is a step forward for those who have completed certificate III in EAL, and wish to further their comprehension of English language. It is designed for individuals who already have a reasonable understanding and knowledge of the language and can communicate effectively but wish to improve it further. To be more precise, this course is specifically designed for those individuals who want to improve their language skills in order to apply in different colleges/universities or wish to establish a career. Through this course, students will learn how to: develop and present complex presentations, take notes from complex aural text, read and write complex text, review advanced level text, critically analyze and evaluate text, participate in complex conversations and to design and produce documents.
Target group:
The course, just like its predecessor courses (certificate II in EAL and certificate III in EAL), is targeted towards the individuals with non-English speaking background who want to learn English to pursue their goals of higher studies like university degrees, professional qualifications or PhD. Immigrants who have recently moved to the country or have been here for a while and need to establish themselves can benefit greatly from this course.
Course objective:
The objective of this course is to develop communication skills, critical thinking skills, digital literacy, active reading ability and listening skills of the students. Mainly, our focus is to prepare the students for further studies by teaching them research and writing skills, note taking skills, presentation skills and techniques of reading and analyzing data, developing complex documents and producing learning plans and portfolios.
Entry requirements:
There are no entry criteria and anyone who is above 18 and wishes to improve his/her language may apply for this course. However to understand the content better, it is advised that individuals who already have the basic knowledge of the language apply for it.
Course outcomes:
After obtaining this certificate, individuals may be competent enough to apply for colleges and universities for higher studies. Other than that, they might also be able to apply for different jobs which they couldn’t before due to the language barrier. They may use this certificate to apply for more English language courses in Melbourne or elsewhere.
Course structure:
The course spans over 20 weeks and costs $AU 3,000. It consists of core and elective units. Further details about the assessment criteria for each unit are in the course outline.
